Every year, we shear our alpacas in late April or early May, freeing them from their fleece grown in a year.
This wonderful product was considered by the Inca Indians as a gift from the Gods.
With its unique and excellent properties, alpaca wool is one of the best quality wools in the world.
The Inca Indians in Peru to this day thank the alpacas for supplying them with this noble product. They do this in the midst of a ceremony, a feast, and adorn their alpacas.
We have some of the fleece sheared from our animals processed, but we also produce it for sale. Here you can order fleece in 3 quality categories.
The quality of the fleece is expressed in different numbers. You can read the explanation here:
The quality of fleece is primarily determined by its fineness. The closer the CF is to 100%, the less fleece fiber above 30 microns in the fleece and the less likely it is that the wool will irritate when worn on the skin. The average fiber thickness (AFD) is expressed in micrometers. And SD expresses the difference in thickness of individual wool fibers from this average. If AFD 20 and SD 5, it means that each wool fiber is between 15 and 25 micrometers thick. This can also affect processing and comfort when worn. The lower the AFD and SD, the better the quality of the wool.
We try to shear the animals in the least stressful way, so we always call professional alpaca shearers for shearing.
The wool is not mixed, it is also sold and processed per alpaca.
Not only are the fleece of the different animals not mixed, but the wool removed from the different body parts are also selected separately at the time of shearing, as shown in the figure. First class is of the highest quality, second can still be used and the third is usually used in other areas such as rope making, carpeting, soap making.
